DESCRIPTION:PATTERN CUTTING WORKSHOP \n\n\n\nTELL ME MORE \n\n\n\nEveryone has a garment that they wish would last forever\, or that they could get in lots of different colours and fabrics. Come along on this class\, and learn how to trace off your favourite dress or top\, so that you have a fully workable pattern to take home and make again and again. \n\n\n\nDuring this class\, you will learn how to make a paper pattern from your favourite top or dress\, without having to unpick a thing! We will be creating the pattern\, adding seam allowance\, and even making small pattern changes\, such as changing the length\, or adding a seam line.  \n\n\n\nThere won’t be time to make your garment on the course\, but we will talk about construction techniques and the order to sew it at the end. If your pattern has quite a few pieces\, you might have finalised all pieces by the end of the session. \n\n\n\nPlease bring along something old and loved from your wardrobe or something vintage – we cannot trace recently purchased garments from the last 5-10 years. \n\n\n\nTECHNIQUES YOU WILL LEARN \n\n\n\n\nBasic techniques of tracing off a garment onto dot and cross paper\, using push pins\, tracing wheels\, tape measures and a pattern master\n\n\n\nDiscussing pattern cutting theory including seam allowance and grain lines.\n\n\n\nMaking some pattern pieces from scratch\, eg. straight plackets\, simple facings.\n\n\n\nAdd seam allowance\, then cut out your paper pieces and add notches \n\n\n\nDiscussing order of construction \n\n\n\n\nWHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE? \n\n\n\n\nWe will provide all the pattern cutting tools you will need and pattern cutting paper.\n\n\n\nCourse booklet to take home.\n\n\n\nLots of attention from the tutor – maximum 5 students in class. \n\n\n\nTea and coffee and cake\, plus 10% discount in the cafe for lunch\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?\n\n\n\n\nYour favourite top\, shirt or dress – send me a photo once you’ve booked of the garment you’re thinking of making to hello@dotncross.com\n\n\n\nI strongly advise you to bring something simple – with just a few pattern pieces\, eg: front\, back\, sleeve and pocket.\n\n\n\nSomething in cotton or a sturdy-ish fabric will be best if this is your first time tracing. We wouldn’t recommend bringing a jersey or stretch garment\, or a complex tailored garment.\n\n\n\nPlease bring along something old and loved from your wardrobe or something vintage – we cannot trace recently purchased garments from the last 5-10 years.\n\n\n\n\nWHO IS THIS CLASS SUITABLE FOR? \n\n\n\nThis is an intermediate class\, meaning you should have prior experience of working with bought patterns and be comfortable with basic pattern cutting terminology. You will get a lot more out of the class if you’ve already made up a few different garments before and got a good grasp of garment construction. Helen is passionate about empowering others to create their own clothes\, whether they are aspiring professionals or enthusiastic home sewers\, by sharing her industry knowledge and love of the craft.

SUMMARY:Slow Stitch Club – Tuesday 6th October
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our brand new Slow Stitch Club\, meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cornish Craft Barn. Everyone is welcome\, whatever your skill level! \n\n\n\nUnlike our machine-based stitch clubs\, this is a relaxing day of hand stitching: embroidery\, hand quilting\, English paper piecing\, mending\, or whatever you love to stitch. It is not a tutored session\, but a friendly room full of experience to share\, plus lots of lovely chat\, coffee and cake. \n\n\n\nOur first project: to get us started in October we will be making a hand-stitched needle book in felt and linen with simple embroidery. Join in if you’d like to\, or simply bring along your own stitching and enjoy our space. \n\n\n\nThe session runs from 10am – 4pm\, but feel free to come for as much of it as suits you. Lunch can be bought in the cafe with a 10% discount\, and there is plenty of parking outside. \n\n\n\nWe ask for payment quarterly in advance: £17.50 per session\, so £52.50 covers three sessions. If you can’t make a session you can use the credit at any of our other monthly clubs\, or carry one session over within a 6 month period. If you’d like to try us out first\, or just come along occasionally\, a single session is £20.

It’s a relaxed day of playing with watercolour and watching a face appear almost by accident — not a test of accuracy. \nThis is a relaxed\, small-group morning (9:30am–12:45pm) with proper one-to-one time\, and you’ll go home with a finished portrait you’ll actually be proud of\, plenty of tea and cake inside you\, and the slightly addictive feeling that you can do this after all. \nThe secret nobody tells you\nA likeness doesn’t live in careful detail — it lives in a few honest relationships. DESCRIPTION:Our first session will include a short overview of the trailing semi-succulents grown by local business Hearts and Pearls\, who specialise in the propagation of Strings of Hearts and Pearls. You will be given tips on how to care for and propagate these rare succulents and where best to place them in your home. There will be an element of choice on this workshop. \nThe actual planting process is relatively quick\, so the second half of the workshop will be a Macramé session in keeping with the floral theme\, making a sunflower keychain. This relaxed and friendly workshop is perfect for those interested in house plants and wanting to create a sustainable gift from a preloved vintage teacup and saucer. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to one of our many Cornish Craft Barn Stitch Groups. We run several regular groups that meet once a month.  If you’re interested in joining one\, everyone is welcome with any type of project and all levels!  \n\n\n\nThis is an all-day session where you can work on quilting projects on machines or by hand with other quilters who are looking to share ideas and experience and can provide guidance for each other – plus lots of lovely chat\, cake and coffee!  It is not a ‘tutored’ session but a room filled with abundant expertise from which to seek assistance. We can offer short demonstrations or mini projects from time to time if this is something the group decides they want!  \n\n\n\nThe session runs from 10am – 4pm but feel free to attend as much of this as you can to fit in with your other commitments. Lunch can be bought from the cafe with a 10% discount.  Plenty of parking outside and we can give you a hand to get your machines upstairs to the training room if needed.  \n\n\n\nJanome sewing machines can be borrowed from our sewing studio for the day if you’d rather not bring your own. Please let us know in advance so we can make sure one is ready for you. \n\n\n\nWe ask for payment quarterly in advance £17.50 per session\, so £52.50 which covers three sessions for you. Water-soluble oils behave like conventional oils and finish like them too\, but the brushes wash out in water — which makes them a genuinely practical way into oil painting. \nYou will make your own small still-life study over the day. Les begins with the medium itself: how it differs from conventional oils\, what it does well\, and what it asks of you. Then the underpainting — an imprimatura in burnt sienna — building the tonal values of the still life and learning how contrast creates form and depth. After lunch\, colour: mixing and matching accurately from a limited palette\, working thin to thick and dark to light\, and building the layers that give a painting its depth. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a lovely day developing your freemotion embroidery and raw edge applique skills in this follow-on freemotion workshop. This class is aimed at those who have either completed the basic workshop or had a go at freemotion embroidery before.  \n\n\n\nIn this workshop you will have 4 cute designs to choose from with the scope to begin a second design that can be completed at home. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is taught by Caroline Michelle Morgan who is a Textile artist specialising infreemotion embroidery.  \n\n\n\nThroughout the day you will be taught the skills and techniques required to turn your chosen design into a layered picture with cute little 3D elements\, all framed nicely in a rustic mount with coordinating hanging loop. The backing felt and rigid frames are provided however you will need to bring the following materials and equipment with you: \n\n\n\nYou will need to bring the following materials and equipment\, everything apart from the sewing machine feet can be purchased in the shop if needed:  \n\n\n\n Sewing Machine\, please bring your extra wide table for your machine if you have one(helpful but not essential)\, also don’t forget your foot pedal and cable. Freemotion embroidery foot A variety of fabric scraps to produce the raw edge applique artwork Black sewing thread Your usual sewing equipment\, scissors etc Bondaweb For one design you will need approximately 2 metres of fabric tape/ribbon to wrap theframe and 1 metre of coordinating ribbon to make the hanging loop. \n\n\n\nYou can hire a Janome QDC M50 machine for £5 for the day from the Cornish Craft Barn which has an extra wide table and free motion embroidery foot included. SUMMARY:Slow Stitch Club – Tuesday 3rd November
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our Slow Stitch Club\, meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cornish Craft Barn. Everyone is welcome\, whatever your skill level! \n\n\n\nUnlike our machine-based stitch clubs\, this is a relaxing day of hand stitching: embroidery\, hand quilting\, English paper piecing\, mending\, or whatever you love to stitch. It is not a tutored session\, but a friendly room full of experience to share\, plus lots of lovely chat\, coffee and cake. \n\n\n\nWhat to stitch: we may offer a slow stitch project to join in with\, or you are welcome to bring along your own stitching and enjoy our space. \n\n\n\nThe session runs from 10am – 4pm\, but feel free to come for as much of it as suits you. Lunch can be bought in the cafe with a 10% discount\, and there is plenty of parking outside. \n\n\n\nWe ask for payment quarterly in advance: £17.50 per session\, so £52.50 covers three sessions. If you can’t make a session you can use the credit at any of our other monthly clubs\, or carry one session over within a 6 month period. If you’d like to try us out first\, or just come along occasionally\, a single session is £20.

Series 1 got water doing what you meant; this one builds on it — stronger compositions\, a wider range of greys and greens\, and paintings you finish rather than abandon. \nWednesdays 09:30–12:00 — 4\, 11\, 18 and 25 November\, then 2 and 9 December — at the Cornish Craft Barn. £30 a session\, paid as one series of £180. \n\nSix weekly sessions of two and a half hours\, 8 seats\, beginners and improvers together.\nSeries 1 is not a prerequisite — come to this one cold if the Wednesday morning suits you better.\nA short materials list before you start\, and a starter kit at cost if you would rather not buy your own yet.\nA one-page recap each week with the demonstration photos\, and the group’s own album.\nFinished pieces to take home\, and a last session given to whatever the group most wants to nail.\n\nThe ladder: an Essentials half-day is the taster; a Club Series is where you get properly better at one medium; Studio mornings are the room to keep painting in. \n \nGround we cover across the series: \n\nlandscapes — atmospheric ones\, and the sunlight and shadows in them\nwater — sea\, river and harbours\ntrees\, and the different kinds\nportraiture — creative watercolour portraits\nmark making & techniques\ntextures\ncomposition\nperspective in watercolour\nurban ink & wash watercolour sketching\, and travel journalling techniques\nsolutions to common problems — watercolour solutions and secrets\n\nBook your place →
