The first weeks build the acrylic foundations: mixing colour without making mud\, value and volume\, layering dark to light\, bold marks with brush and palette knife. The later weeks open the box — inks\, texture\, collage and paint over that acrylic ground — and the whole series builds towards one piece: St Michael’s Mount in mixed media. Damian’s own finished Mount is on this page — the one from Paint In The Style Of — alongside the mixed-media version\, the study drawing that came before it\, and a bold\, loose pear in impasto acrylic from the first weeks. DESCRIPTION:Book your place — £55 → \nAn introduction to water-soluble oils — a full day with guest tutor Les Trewin. \nOil paint without the solvents. Water-soluble oils behave like conventional oils and finish like them too\, but the brushes wash out in water — which makes them a genuinely practical way into oil painting. \nYou will make your own small still-life study over the day. Les begins with the medium itself: how it differs from conventional oils\, what it does well\, and what it asks of you. Then the underpainting — an imprimatura in burnt sienna — building the tonal values of the still life and learning how contrast creates form and depth. After lunch\, colour: mixing and matching accurately from a limited palette\, working thin to thick and dark to light\, and building the layers that give a painting its depth. You will finish with advice on varnishing. \nBy the end you should have the skill and the confidence to pick up water-soluble oils on your own. \nNo experience needed. Boards come ready gessoed with a still-life drawing prepared for you\, and you take home a palette with enough paint to finish your piece if you would like to. \nFriday\, 10am–4pm\, with half an hour for lunch\, at the Cornish Craft Barn. \nBook your place →
