DESCRIPTION:Learn the art of freemotion embroidery in this class aimed at beginners.\n\n\n\nLearn the art of freemotion embroidery in this class aimed at beginners.  Enjoy the freedom of drawing with your machine to create your own artwork.  This in-depth ‘Afternoon Tea’ themed beginner’s class covers everything you need to know to learn this technique\, from setting up your machine and what equipment you will need\, to top tips and handy advice to get the most out of this wonderfully creative technique.  This workshop is taught by Caroline Michelle Morgan who is a Textile artist specialising in freemotion embroidery.  Throughout the day you will be taught the skills and techniques required\, by producing several small samples\, growing in confidence as you become more skilled at the technique.  Ending the day by producing a lovely piece of freemotion artwork using the raw edge applique technique.   \n\n\n\nYou will need to bring the following materials and equipment\, everything apart from the sewing machine feet can be purchased in the shop if needed:  \n\n\n\n\nSewing Machine\, please bring your extra wide table for your machine if you have one (helpful but not essential)\, also don’t forget your foot pedal and cable.   If you would like to borrow a machine for the day; we have some Janome rental machines you can hire for £5 for the day they have the freemotion embroidery feet needed. SUMMARY:Wheal Rose Stitch Club - 2nd Tuesday Monthly
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to one of our many Cornish Craft Barn Stitch Groups. We run several regular groups that meet once a month.  If you’re interested in joining one\, everyone is welcome with any type of project and all levels!  \n\n\n\nThis is an all-day session where you can work on quilting projects on machines or by hand with other quilters who are looking to share ideas and experience and can provide guidance for each other – plus lots of lovely chat\, cake and coffee!  It is not a ‘tutored’ session but a room filled with abundant expertise from which to seek assistance. We can offer short demonstrations or mini projects from time to time if this is something the group decides they want!  \n\n\n\nThe session runs from 10am – 4pm but feel free to attend as much of this as you can to fit in with your other commitments. Lunch can be bought from the cafe with a 10% discount.  Plenty of parking outside and we can give you a hand to get your machines upstairs to the training room if needed.  \n\n\n\nWe have several new Janome quilting sewing machines available to borrow for the day if you need one or find it easier than bringing one in from home. Please book ahead or let us know if you need one so we make sure we have enough available.  \n\n\n\nWe ask for payment quarterly in advance £17.50 per session\, so £52.50 which covers three sessions for you. If you can’t make a session you can use a credit up on any of the other Wheal monthly groups we run\, or carry one session over in any 6 month period. DESCRIPTION:PATTERN CUTTING WORKSHOP \n\n\n\nTELL ME MORE \n\n\n\nEveryone has a garment that they wish would last forever\, or that they could get in lots of different colours and fabrics. Come along on this class\, and learn how to trace off your favourite dress or top\, so that you have a fully workable pattern to take home and make again and again. \n\n\n\nDuring this class\, you will learn how to make a paper pattern from your favourite top or dress\, without having to unpick a thing! We will be creating the pattern\, adding seam allowance\, and even making small pattern changes\, such as changing the length\, or adding a seam line.  \n\n\n\nThere won’t be time to make your garment on the course\, but we will talk about construction techniques and the order to sew it at the end. If your pattern has quite a few pieces\, you might have finalised all pieces by the end of the session. \n\n\n\nPlease bring along something old and loved from your wardrobe or something vintage – we cannot trace recently purchased garments from the last 5-10 years. \n\n\n\nTECHNIQUES YOU WILL LEARN \n\n\n\n\nBasic techniques of tracing off a garment onto dot and cross paper\, using push pins\, tracing wheels\, tape measures and a pattern master\n\n\n\nDiscussing pattern cutting theory including seam allowance and grain lines.\n\n\n\nMaking some pattern pieces from scratch\, eg. straight plackets\, simple facings.\n\n\n\nAdd seam allowance\, then cut out your paper pieces and add notches \n\n\n\nDiscussing order of construction \n\n\n\n\nWHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE? \n\n\n\n\nWe will provide all the pattern cutting tools you will need and pattern cutting paper.\n\n\n\nCourse booklet to take home.\n\n\n\nLots of attention from the tutor – maximum 5 students in class. \n\n\n\nTea and coffee and cake\, plus 10% discount in the cafe for lunch\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?\n\n\n\n\nYour favourite top\, shirt or dress – send me a photo once you’ve booked of the garment you’re thinking of making to hello@dotncross.com\n\n\n\nI strongly advise you to bring something simple – with just a few pattern pieces\, eg: front\, back\, sleeve and pocket.\n\n\n\nSomething in cotton or a sturdy-ish fabric will be best if this is your first time tracing. SUMMARY:Slow Stitch Club – Tuesday 6th October
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our brand new Slow Stitch Club\, meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cornish Craft Barn. Everyone is welcome\, whatever your skill level! \n\n\n\nUnlike our machine-based stitch clubs\, this is a relaxing day of hand stitching: embroidery\, hand quilting\, English paper piecing\, mending\, or whatever you love to stitch. It is not a tutored session\, but a friendly room full of experience to share\, plus lots of lovely chat\, coffee and cake. \n\n\n\nOur first project: to get us started in October we will be making a hand-stitched needle book in felt and linen with simple embroidery. Join in if you’d like to\, or simply bring along your own stitching and enjoy our space. \n\n\n\nThe session runs from 10am – 4pm\, but feel free to come for as much of it as suits you. Lunch can be bought in the cafe with a 10% discount\, and there is plenty of parking outside. \n\n\n\nWe ask for payment quarterly in advance: £17.50 per session\, so £52.50 covers three sessions. If you can’t make a session you can use the credit at any of our other monthly clubs\, or carry one session over within a 6 month period. The wall\, the street\, the water — those are just what the light happens to be falling on\, and once you start seeing it that way\, everything gets simpler. \nThis is three hours of short\, focused exercises rather than one long painting. Each one hands you a specific tool: \n\nDeciding your lights first — protecting the whites before the first wash\, so the glow is built in rather than rescued later.\nShadows with colour in them — why a shadow is never grey\, how warm light throws cool shadow (and the other way round)\, and how to mix one that stays luminous instead of muddy.\nValue before detail — getting the three-tone structure right so the picture reads from across the room. Most paintings that “don’t work” fail here.\nEdges that let the light move — where to let an edge dissolve and where to keep it crisp\, so sunlight looks like it’s actually happening.\nReflected light — the bounce that stops a shadow side going dead.\n\nYou’ll leave with the exercises themselves\, which are worth repeating at home\, and a way of looking at any scene that tells you what to paint and what to leave out. \nSuitable for anyone comfortable holding a brush — you don’t need to have painted light deliberately before.
