SUMMARY:Sunlight & Shadows: Watercolour
DESCRIPTION:Book your place — £33 → \nLight is the real subject. The wall\, the street\, the water — those are just what the light happens to be falling on\, and once you start seeing it that way\, everything gets simpler. \nThis is three hours of short\, focused exercises rather than one long painting. Each one hands you a specific tool: \n\nDeciding your lights first — protecting the whites before the first wash\, so the glow is built in rather than rescued later.\nShadows with colour in them — why a shadow is never grey\, how warm light throws cool shadow (and the other way round)\, and how to mix one that stays luminous instead of muddy.\nValue before detail — getting the three-tone structure right so the picture reads from across the room. Most paintings that “don’t work” fail here.\nEdges that let the light move — where to let an edge dissolve and where to keep it crisp\, so sunlight looks like it’s actually happening.\nReflected light — the bounce that stops a shadow side going dead.\n\nYou’ll leave with the exercises themselves\, which are worth repeating at home\, and a way of looking at any scene that tells you what to paint and what to leave out. \nSuitable for anyone comfortable holding a brush — you don’t need to have painted light deliberately before. Nothing to bring: all materials and brushes are provided\, and there’s tea\, coffee and cake throughout. \nCome for this alone at £20\, or pair it with Watercolour Essentials that morning for £32 the two. \nBook your place →

SUMMARY:Acrylics for Beginners - Bold\, Fast & Loose!
DESCRIPTION:Book your place — £35 → \nWe will spend a fun-filled half-day immersed in the world of acrylics for beginners\, which will include impasto techniques. We will establish a base set of acrylic painting skills and then deconstruct and simplify objects and references\, enabling us to capture them in acrylics using thickly laid passages of paint\, either with a brush or a palette knife. \nBy the end of the afternoon\, we will have developed confidence in using acrylics and also applying paint thickly to the canvas\, incorporating some on-canvas mixing and blending\, without creating a muddy texture. We’ll get a bit messy\, have loads of fun\, kickstart a new painting habit (and technique)\, and enjoy cake from the café! What could be better? No previous experience is necessary; a no-excuse price with materials provided! \nThe morning will be filled with fast-paced learning exercises and mini-tutorials to entertain and help you make significant strides in your confidence and control in this interesting and freeing technique. \nImpasto is a technique used in painting\, where paint is laid on an area of the surface thickly\, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. Paint can also be mixed right on the canvas. When dry\, impasto provides texture; the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Water Soluble Oils — with Les Trewin
DESCRIPTION:Book your place — £49 → \nAn introduction to water-soluble oils — a full day with guest tutor Les Trewin. \nOil paint without the solvents. Water-soluble oils behave like conventional oils and finish like them too\, but the brushes wash out in water — which makes them a genuinely practical way into oil painting. \nYou will make your own small still-life study over the day. Les begins with the medium itself: how it differs from conventional oils\, what it does well\, and what it asks of you. Then the underpainting — an imprimatura in burnt sienna — building the tonal values of the still life and learning how contrast creates form and depth. After lunch\, colour: mixing and matching accurately from a limited palette\, working thin to thick and dark to light\, and building the layers that give a painting its depth. You will finish with advice on varnishing. \nBy the end you should have the skill and the confidence to pick up water-soluble oils on your own. \nNo experience needed. Boards come ready gessoed with a still-life drawing prepared for you\, and you take home a palette with enough paint to finish your piece if you would like to. \nFriday\, 10am–4pm\, with half an hour for lunch\, at the Cornish Craft Barn. \nBook your place →

SUMMARY:Children’s Book Workshop · Series 5 — Autumn
DESCRIPTION:Book your place — £160 → \nDates in this series:Friday 23 October\, 9:00amFriday 30 October\, 9:00amFriday 6 November\, 9:00amFriday 13 November\, 9:00amFriday 20 November\, 9:00amFriday 4 December\, 9:00amFriday 18 December\, 9:00am \nFive Friday mornings to take your picture book from an idea to work you are proud to show. Character\, story shape\, the page turn\, and the art that carries it — with a fortnight between each session to draw. \nFridays 09:00–13:00 — 23 and 30 October\, then 6\, 13 and 20 November — at the Cornish Craft Barn. £160 for the series of five\, which is £32 a morning\, and your monthly meet-up is included free. \nWhy a fortnight and not a week. The work happens between the sessions. A week is enough to start a page and not enough to finish one\, and the people who got the most out of the last run were the ones who had time to sit with it. Two weeks is that time. \n\nWeek one\, 23 October — set the scene. Gear up\, get your project files together\, and build them with the rest of the group.\n30 October — develop your work in earnest. Ensure your storybook dummy is complete and work has begun on words and spreads.\n6 November — the monthly meet-up\, included. You meet people who have done the Children’s Book Workshop before: their inspiration\, their advice\, and what they wish they had known at week one.\n13 and 20 November — develop your work in earnest\, folding in the next steps between each.\nThen show it. You bring what you have made to the next monthly meet-up\, and show your new Children’s Book friends.\n\n\nEight seats\, beginners and improvers together.\nA short materials list before you start\, and a starter kit at cost if you would rather not buy your own yet.\nA one-page recap each session with the demonstration photos\, and the group’s own album.\nFirst refusal on Series 6 before it goes public.\n\nThe ladder: an Essentials half-day is the taster; a Series is where you get properly better at one thing; Studio mornings are the room to keep working in. \nBook your place →

SUMMARY:Slow Stitch Club – Tuesday 3rd November
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our Slow Stitch Club\, meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cornish Craft Barn. Everyone is welcome\, whatever your skill level! \n\n\n\nUnlike our machine-based stitch clubs\, this is a relaxing day of hand stitching: embroidery\, hand quilting\, English paper piecing\, mending\, or whatever you love to stitch. It is not a tutored session\, but a friendly room full of experience to share\, plus lots of lovely chat\, coffee and cake. \n\n\n\nWhat to stitch: we may offer a slow stitch project to join in with\, or you are welcome to bring along your own stitching and enjoy our space. \n\n\n\nThe session runs from 10am – 4pm\, but feel free to come for as much of it as suits you. Lunch can be bought in the cafe with a 10% discount\, and there is plenty of parking outside. \n\n\n\nWe ask for payment quarterly in advance: £17.50 per session\, so £52.50 covers three sessions. If you can’t make a session you can use the credit at any of our other monthly clubs\, or carry one session over within a 6 month period. If you’d like to try us out first\, or just come along occasionally\, a single session is £20.
