A message from Tony:

‘Join me for a two-day course in oil painting. The course is designed for complete beginners and I want to try and get you started with this versatile medium. I’ll show you the basics, how to set up and how to swerve the usual beginner mistakes. We’ll quickly move to how to tackle the business of actually making art! We’ll do one day in the studio on putting a basic landscape sketch together in paint and how to use your kit without getting in a mess.

Day two we’ll go out to the beach and put a painting together in the wild. I’m a plein air specialist and I take delight in getting artists out of the studio and out to where the inspiration happens!

Unusually for a course of this nature, I will be painting on the beach on Wednesday. If you’d like to join me then with your newfound skills I’ll happily let you paint along and help if you get stuck, a sort of free bonus day, entirely optional.’

Tony will have canvas boards and other bits and bobs on hand.

Oil paints

Georgia or Winton Burnt Sienna, Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Crimson Alizarin, Cadmium Red

Brushes

A couple of hog brushes and some flat acrylic brushes. Nothing too small and fiddly

Misc Items

  • Pallette Knife
  • Cotton rag – T-shirt or similar
  • A jam jar with an airtight lid or stainless steel brush washer if you are feeling posh.
  • Bag or work box for all your stuff

Easel

A folding easel or pochard box for plein air is invaluable. Tony’s favourite is in the link below, but bring whatever you have.

Note this one contains a palette to lay out paints and mix with otherwise you will need a tear-off mixing palette or a board https://amzn.eu/d/34EZYub

I paint everything, there isn’t really a theme. I paint en plein air (outside) where possible. I’m obsessed by light and water.

I’m not classically trained, I owe most of my learning to contemporary artists kind enough to give me lessons and guidance. I’ve found teaching has probably taught me more as it forces me to distil my ideas into clarity before I share them.
