Patchwork and Quilting for Beginners 6 session block
January 28, 2025 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Always wanted to know how to do patchwork but never found the time? Then it’s time to explore the wonderful world of quilting and join us to learn the basics of patchwork and quilting! Our Learn to Quilt course is designed for beginners who want to master the basics of quilting and create their own stunning handmade quilted pieces. Over the span of six weeks, you’ll receive guidance and hands-on practice to develop the essential skills required to create your own beautiful quilts and patchwork gifts.
In our beginner’s quilting class, you will learn all the basic techniques using a rotary cutter and sewing machine to produce different sampler blocks which we will piece together to create your own beautiful quilt.
Your tutor Rachel will share with you all her tips for colour theory selection, perfect cutting, pressing and, of course, lining everything up beautifully. With Rachel you will be guided through the whole process, from the design/layout of your quilt, fabric colour and pattern choice, to binding, adding wadding, quilting and finishing.
By the end of the class, you will take home your lovingly made sampler quilt or cushion top.
The 6 week course will run on Tuesdays: January 28th, 4th February, 11th February , with a one week break during February half term and continue on 25th February, 4th March finishing on 11th March 2025.
A message from Rachel:
Who is this class for?
This class is for you if you had used a sewing machine before and know the basics and want to learn patchwork and quilting techniques.
This class is for beginners but perhaps not for you if you have never used a sewing machine at all before – we recommend completing one of our beginner’s classes first on learn to sew or get to know your sewing machine.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the necessary knowledge and hands-on experience to confidently embark on your quilting journey!
We’ll also provide plenty of coffee and cake! All attendees also receive 10% discount on any cafe purchases on the day from the Cornish Craft Barn.
What you need to bring…
Fabric
If you have some fabric already you wish to use please bring it with you; we are always keen to reuse and recycle what we have instead of buying new. You may want to wait until after our first lesson before buying anything so we can guide you on fabric choice/colour/pattern etc.
Approximately 8 fat quarters would be ideal, but don’t worry if you don’t know what this means – all will be revealed.
Cotton Thread
100% cotton thread in a neutral colour, I like pale grey or beige – we have this for sale
Sewing Machine
If you have one you want to use please bring it; including a 1/4” patchwork foot (if you have one) don’t forget its cable, foot pedal and instruction manual. We do have Janome machines you can borrow.
