Botanical Collage Workshop

November 4 @ 10:00 am 4:00 pm

Join International Award Winning Carla Jennings for a fun day of paper & paint as she takes you through her process of creating an elegant botanical collage.

You’ll first learn to mix a harmonious colour palette for your collage. We’ll then paint shapes & patterns on our papers and use fresh leaves & grasses to print botanicals.
You’ll learn the principles of selecting the perfect combination of papers for your collage and how to bring the whole piece together.

Suitable for complete beginners or experienced painters. This workshop is a fresh approach to painting & by the end of the day you’ll be buzzing with ideas & inspiration to carry forward into future projects.

Carla will supply wet-strength tissue paper for the workshop. The Cornish Craft Barn has a body of useful supplies to hand but you may wish to come armed with some of the suggested supplies listed from Carla below:

  • A bag to take home your collage papers & scraps
  • Board or thick paper for the base of your collage
  • Various papers you have lying around, eg printer paper, packaging paper, brown paper, graph paper, old book pages, and tissue paper.
  • Fine liner pens, gel pens or posca pens – especially white

MY PROCESS

I initially work from a very loose composition, allowing the inks to flow & create marks I could never have planned.

Most pieces are painted with a limited palette of 3-5 colours to create harmony & a sense of calm.
I continue to work intuitively, using a mix of different media, including hand printed collage papers using fresh foliage from my garden & Cornish hedgerows.

As a teenager I had a particular love for calligraphy & enjoy integrating elements of this into my work through asemic writing.

The refining process involves merging & eliminating some of the initial marks, then adding intrigue with final decorative details.

I approach every painting with a sensitive sense of play & free expression, going with the flow & listening to how my body feels.

I hope as you view my artwork you’re reminded of the need to stay present and enjoy the lighter moments in life.
